So, I made a rookie wedding-planning mistake a couple weeks ago. I made an appointment for engagement pictures... and I have more than a month to obsess over the details.
Rookie. Mistake.
You see, I have since ordered at least 15 dresses and no less than 5 pairs of shoes. I'm looking for the "perfect look". And don't even get me started with Mr. RH.
My goal is to have 3 looks that I LOVE for myself... and then I'll work on coordinating for him.
I was literally planning on hanging my outfits in his closet and spending some time there just really pondering his wardrobe and any new pieces we need to add.
Yes, it's ok to roll your eyes so hard it hurts.
So I snapped up some dresses at, of all places, Kohls last week online.... and I'll let you all be the judge.
This first dress is the one that got it started. It had ruching along the side, a fun pattern, seemed long enough... win win win.
Except... see the last picture. Is it just me, or is the neckline crooked and the hem going downhill?? Weird.
Also, where did my boobs go?! (Side note: I think I need to go find Victoria's Secret this weekend. In the form of gel or padding. WHERE DID THEY GO?!)
I thought the next two dresses were the same dress in a a print that was slightly-less-loud... but it turns out they were more of a sack-dress and had no waistline, which really doesn't work for my shape. I added my trusty belt to mixed results...
And then again in blue. With the addition of the back pic to let you see what I'm working with in the belt situation.
Part of the problem is that the belt is probably too small... and then the other is that the dress just seems to be not my style.
I love this next chevron dress... but then again - chevron is over-staying its' welcome, and the dress is too big. Again, where did my girls go?!
And I would be remiss in life if I didn't say I wasn't searching for my Perfect Blue color everywhere... and I think I found it.
Too bad that ruffle was quite so large, otherwise I thought this number was quite fetching.
And then these last two sets weren't really for engagement pics at all, they were more for 'live-in' summer dresses...
Again, the top on these two was huge on me... you can really see the folds swimming on the pink dress.
And this last one wasn't much to write home about, but super comfortable.
So if you need me, I'll just be returning everything I've ever purchased and scouring all ends of the internet for a semi-dressy hot dress for engagement photos. In a month.
I'm not sure I'll survive until then.
Rookie mistake.
Poor Mr. RH.

I'm not sure how I stumbled upon your blog! But it's fun. Thanks. And wouldn't you like to make rookie mistakes in wedding planning? It's not the kind of thing you want to plan multiple times.
Absolutely EXCELLENT point Denise. I'll take rookie mistake anytime! :)
I actually love the blue ruffle dress on you...the ruffle doesn't look too big to me. Have you tried looking at francesca's for dresses? They have some fun and cute options right now!
I completely agree with the girl in the red shoes. The ruffle dress looks AWESOME!
I vote for the ruffle dress too! I really prefer pictures of myself when I'm in solids. I feel "fun" when I wear prints but then I see a pic and say WTF was I thinking! We didn't even do engagement pics - this is one of the reasons why. I can hardly dress myself daily - the wedding will be bad enough for me. ha ha
Just make sure you and your fiance are similarly dressy in the pics - I hate when the girl is all cute in a dress w/ awesome jewelry and heels and the guy is in khaki shorts and flip flops.
Ruffle dress!!!!!! :)
Picking out photo session outfits can be sooo difficult! And for what it's worth - I don't think that ruffle is too big. It's worth a reconsider, I think! You look gorge in it!
I love the blue dress with the ruffle! SO cute!
girl you need to keep that blue ruffle dress. Seriously. Ruffles are SO forgiving and make the girls look even BETTER. Also? Everything I've "heard" about pro. pics/engagement photos says solid colors photograph better. That or I'm lying to you because I LOVE THAT BLUE DRESS and Blue is your THING. think of how CUTE those pics will look on your escort card table with all the matching blue paraphenalia around?! yes yes yes.
Ruffle dress, FTW. Could you bring it to a tailor to mellow out the ruffle a bit- he/she could maybe get rid of some of the excess and pin more of it down?
If you are buying dresses at Kohl's, you have to assume the quality may not be awesome and hems may be a little askew. If you want a great looking dress, you may have to step up where you purchase from. Turns out, that quite often, cheap clothes look cheap!

I love the blue ruffle dress! It's adorable and will photograph well. I've heard it's better to stay clear of patterns for engagement photos- they can tend to look too busy. You want your faces to by the lightest part of the picture so your eye is drawn their first- so no white/ beige. Bright, solid colors are the way to go! The blue ruffle dress nails it in my opinion. :)
Did you ask your photographer what photographs best? Mine told us to stay away from bold patterns.
I'm digging the ruffles!
Um, the ruffle dress looks amazing!!! You should TOTALLY wear that one!!!
I need for you to wear that blue ruffle dress!
I have the same problem with all of the dresses at Kohl's- they are either too short, too big or the armholes are ginormous. I gave up!
and as an amateur photographer, I will advise against any bold prints and say that you should stick with a solid color that coordinates with RH. :)
The patterned dresses are cute, but I have always been told that solid colors photograph best. Patterns can be distracting and too much to focus on instead of you. I love the blue one with the ruffled top! see the explanation here: http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_photography/take_better_photos/tips/look_good.html
The ruffle does not look too big, it looks great! It's a pretty color on you and will be easier to coordinate than a print would be.
i'd go with a solid color, the blue ruffle dress looks quite cute. Have you checked out Loft or J.Crew? J.Crew has good options in their factory line.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of these! THey are all so cute! But I do love that blue chevron one!
I like the solid color dress the best. I think those show up the best in portraits.
