Hawaii: Pearl Harbor

Back when I had my brain screwed on straight, I was blogging about my trip to HAWAII. Yeah, I feel like it's an all-caps vacation.

Feel free to check out Part 1 and Part 2.

Despite the fact that we were on The Big Island of Hawaii (and not the more popular islands of Maui or Ohau), my dad decided that it wasn't a trip to Hawaii without a trip to Pearl Harbor. So off we went bright and early one morning to Ohau.

We arrived at the crack of dawn on a Tuesday and still couldn't get out to the memorial until after noon due to some biiig old tour buses. So we had time to tour the USS Missouri beforehand. Cue excitement.... or not. I'm not the world's biggest history buff, please point me in the direction of the mall.

KIDDING!

But really, what better place to have a photo shoot than in front of a bunch of American flags? The other people touring that morning were quite amused. Happy to have provided some entertainment :)

And then of course... by the end of the tour, I was also dying of boredom. My daddy saw this photo shoot coming and grabbed my camera before I even asked. Smart guy!

And just because he took my pictures doesn't mean he would pose for mine. I was trying to get a picture of his face and he kept turning away from me... and bam, I saw the big guns in his glasses. He did hold still for me to take this picture... smart man.

Tree of Life

And last but not least, the view from the memorial itself:

Because the memorial is on an active military base, the tour guides and everyone working at the visitor's center was pretty specific on the locations you could take pictures from. A girl on my ferry to the memorial got quite a scolding for taking a picture from the ferry boat to the memorial (although, we were warned not to take photos).

It was pretty intense and it's clear that this place was a business. They were quite insistent about moving visitors on and off the memorial quite quickly.

It was definitely a neat experience and I'm glad I got to see it, although I can't say I'd see it again if I came back to Hawaii. But then again, I'm no history buff!

Oh Hawaii. I wish I were back on your beach.

Happy Tuesday!
