A Great Bakesperiment

(See what I was trying to do with that title there? Bake + Experiment should really = bakexperiment but it just didn't seem right without an S in it. Gosh, making up words is TOUGH this early in the morning.)

Over the weekend, my dad decided it would be a good idea to bake his own soft pretzels.

I blame it on the Indianapolis Star. He's always finding weird recipes and ideas in there.

So armed with this recipe we had ourselves a project.

It's simple, in theory.

Mix up the dry ingredients and then dump in the wet stuff. Knead for ten minutes.
And let me just say - ten minutes might as well be eternity. Thank goodness those aren't my hands kneading the dough!

Then you let it sit for 5 minutes to rise before splitting it into logs. Which you then roll out and braid.

Then we let them sit overnight but you chill them for at least an hour in the fridge.

After that, they go for a dip in a baking soda bath.

And then into the oven they go!

And after a bit....

Salty deliciousness.

They were, of course, not quite as soft and chewy as the ones you'd find at your local mall... but they were deliciously carb-y. Mmm.

Mmm. I could go for a soft pretzel right about now.
