My Lunch is So Depressing

You know one thing I never anticipated about "working life?"

Lunch.

So, the place where I work... there are no food establishments around it. And, unfortunately, most days I am alone in my store and therefore don't get a real break for lunch.

(Yes, it's against the law but I'm the boss so who are they going to blame? That would be me.)

So every day I pack my lunch. Usually I pack homemade bourbon chicken and rice... but after about a month of that I can't take it anymore. It's just gross.

(Yes, I promised several of you I would post how to make homemade bourbon chicken. Later this week. Promise.)

So for the past few days I've had homemade fried rice - plain.

Oh hi, that's just me, starving to death on boring food.

I don't like sandwiches unless they are on toasted bread... which pretty much negates them from lunch contention.

(Seriously, this has to be the most boring post ever.)

I like something warm to eat... it fills me up and puts me in a much better mood all afternoon. (And I have a microwave so I can heat up pretty much anything.)

So.... what do you eat for lunch?

And don't tell me about your awesome work cafeteria (does such a thing exist?) or the fact that you eat tons of Chick-fil-A. (Ok, please do tell me. I want to know!)

Cause I might die of jealousy... but at least it will be a delicious way to go.

Starvingly yours,

if you like warm sandwiches, try Lean Cuisine paninis. They come with a little crisper pan so that you get the toasted efect in the microwave. The chicken, spinach and mushroom one is my fave. I add feta cheese crumbles to mine. Delish!

I always make extra dinner, so I can bring leftovers to work for lunch. Today I'm having leftover beef and mushroom stew over pasta...YUM!

I feel your pain! I usually end up with a boring old sandwich, so, I'm not loads of help. But, leftovers are great because you can heat them up and then you have a nice warm lunch and something that doesn't take time to put together in the morning.

I hate to be hungry! I like pretzels for a quick filling snack..

I love the Lean Cuisine paninis and mini pizzas. I also am a fan of bringing Laughing Cow cheese light spreadables with some crackers for a snack. I also make salads to snack on the night before and they hold up pretty well!

I eat Lean Cuisines for lunch. They have a great variety of dishes, so I don't usually eat the same thing twice in a week. They are usually very filling, but I add a salad for extra veggies.

I usually eat Sonic, a local cafe (because they deliver to me), or bring one of those things where it gives you the bread, meat, cheese, condiments & you just microwave it (I don't know what they're called, but I call them adult lunchables). I prefer not to leave the office to get lunch though because I cannot stand lunch time traffic!

I do alot of Amy's frozen meals. They're organic and a million times yummier than Lean Cuisines. Enchilada bowls are life savers. I just got this new microwavable noodle bowl thing that I hope is good. I'll let you know around 2pm. :)

I'm a teacher, and we don't have time to leave to go get lunch... So, it's pretty much bring your own lunch or eat what the kids are eating.

I'm a big fan of soups that I can warm up quickly in the microwave.

Or I do enjoy it when my hubby has the day off and can bring me something... Those days are far in between, though.

Lean Cuisines.

Or leftover pizza.

Or food from the awesome cafeteria. (Yes, it's true.)

I bring a sandwich daily on toasted bread! If you use a hearty bread, it won't get soggy and will stay the perfect consistency, trust me!

Most days I eat soup. I stock up on those cans of Progresso Soups (the Light ones) and keep them in my office handy. I have one can for lunch, with some veggies and hummus, or chips and salsa. Nothing fancy, but it's nice to have a warm meal. I also like the frozen Lean Cuisines (or Smart Ones), but can't always remember to bring them!

Avocados and eggs most days. xoxo

Why is is that we always get stuck in ruts. Last year, I was on a egg roll rut (I found ones at the store that only had 80 calories each, and always filled me up) and then I moved on to chicken cordon bleu for almost 3 months straight....yuck! I can't even look at it now.

Thanks for letting me know I am not the only one in a lunch rut.

Have a great week.

totally unhealthy but pizza rolls or bagel bites are amazing :)

I hate to tell you that I eat out at least 2-3 days a week. I usually work at least 10 hour days so sometimes I need the break. But, when I do eat in the office, I often microwave Lean Cuisine/Smart Ones meals - the SW Chicken Panini and Creamy Rigatoni with Chicken and Broccoli are my favorites. Other good ideas - tortillas with refried beans & cheese with chips and salsa are good (and can be healthy with ff beans, light cheese and healthy tortillas); salads with grilled chicken, and anything leftover from dinner. Hope you find some inspiration in the comments to break out of your lunch rut!

Oh man I had the same problem a few years ago when I worked for an attorney who didn't like people eating in the office because of lingering "food smells". So I ate my lunch, every day, in my car in the parking lot, I kid you not. I brought my lunch from home to save money but that hour in the parking lot was pretty lonely so I feel you!

For lunch I usually bring assorted pastas or a combo of rice + veggies + chicken. In the summertime, I like entree salads (romaine hearts + tomatoes + kalamata olives, cheese, walnuts) and a piece of fruit. I like making everything from scratch, so no frozen microwaveable meals for me!

Lunch is seriously the highlight in my otherwise dull work day! And I'm sorry to say that I don't have any great suggestions.

Not to pour salt in a wound, but I go out to eat every day -- which is terrible for my budget but great for my mental health! My office is windowless and if I don't leave for my lunch hour, I will have spent almost nine hours under artificial lighting in front of a computer. And that ain't workin'!

I agree with the Lean Cuisine suggestions -- the spaghetti is my favorite! They'd fit your warm meal requirements well and aren't expensive. When I worked late hours, I'd have one every night before bed! LOL. Probably not wise, but it was a necessity at the time. :)

Lean Cuisine! They taste amazing and give you a fair amount of food.

Uncle Bens 90 min rice. I always eat the Jasmine or the Basmati and pair it with some (frozen) steamed veggies & salmon.

Lunch can definitely get repetitive and boring for me, but I eat sandwiches usually. I like a good wrap though!

I also have a lean cuisine every now and again!

Like a few others said, I like to cook extra at dinner to take for lunch the next day. I also love to bring hummus and pita chips, fruit, soups, and I love my 60 calorie jello puddings!

I second cooking extra when you make dinner so you have leftovers! Lean Cuisines are my go-to, some of them are pretty good!

How 'bout putting a toaster oven in your store? That way you could toast up a sandwich when you were in the mood.

Trina said...

I love toasted sandwiches too and we just happen to have a microwave that has a built in toaster. Fancy, I know. :) I went about two months eating Lentil Chili, so I know what you mean. Last week it was sandwiches, week before that regular chili and some pasta dish I made. I'm looking for something exciting too :)
