The Classy Bookshelf

I am interrupting your regularly scheduled Q&A programming to tell you about another book that I was slow to get on the bandwagon for: Firefly Lane.

The book tells the story of two young women who meet promise to take on the world together - forever. Naturally, this relationship has ups and downs, betrayals, and all that good jazz.

However.

(SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS)

(FOR REAL, STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW....)

(Cause this pretty much ruins the book.)

When Kate gets sick... this book hit me like a freaking ton of bricks. In the face.

All I could think is "I wonder if my mom missed her friends when she was dying."

I wonder if she even knew she was dying. The doctor told my mom she was dying on a Friday - that there was nothing more they could do.

She died on Sunday, a few hours after I drove home from college.

As a read the final chapters of this book, I couldn't help but think that I was glad her illness didn't drag on and on.... but I'm still devastated that I never got my storybook goodbye.

I didn't get my "I'm so proud of you, I love you" speech.

So... now that I've completely de-railed any type of review that I was writing...

This book was sweet, and I love stories about friends.

But gosh... sometimes real life certainly interferes with how much I could enjoy this book.

Too close to home.

I promise to return to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow. I think.

Happy Wednesday and Happy September 1st!

Ugh, not the best way to close out a book.

I pretty much only read books (and see movies) that are feel gooders as I like to call them.

I've got enough anxiety in my life! ;)

But thanks for the review - I'll be passing!!

Revisiting the toughest moments in your life definitely can stir up some feelings and emotions. Sometime all too overwhelming. Next book should be an uplifting one!

I've read a few of her books and they were pretty good. I like her style.

I loved this book as well. Books that bring up emotions are the hardest for me to read.

I really liked the book but it was so hard to read. I can't imagine being in that situation.

I liked this book. The end was super sad, but I loved how it told of their friendship over ALL the years. I was kind of like reading several different books. One point that I thought was tough was when she realized the real reason she was on the talk show. I would feel SO betrayed. It was really sad to read that part.

OOOH!! Now I want to read this book! Thanks for talking about it! :)

This has been on my list to read, and it's good to have a heads up that it is going to be sad at the end. I still want to read it anyway though. Just maybe read it between 2 lighthearted fun books.

I thought this was a fabulous book! It was so sad though. I cried and cried when Kate got sick.

I think I have this book someplace...I'll be sure & remember that it is a "sniffly" book rather than a fluffy book. I try not to do more than one sad one in a row!

I agree it was a great book, but very diffucult for me to read. I love Kristin Hannah's novels. Looking forward to reading 2 more of hers after I am done with one I just started last night.

ok, so I totally just didn't read this post, because I heard the words "spoiler alert" whispered...

But I'll totally put it on my list. Right after I cruise through The Hunger Games.

Thanks for sharing your personal story with us. I'm not sure I could make it through the book. I'm pretty sure I would cry through the whole thing.

I listened to this book on audio. I was holding back tears while driving towards the end. I can't imagine how hard of a read this must have been for you.

I hate getting blindsided by books and movies that hit way to close to home when I have no idea what they are even going to be about.

I thought about you all day today because I have totally been craving mint brownie ice cream. I had never heard of it before and it sounds like the most fabulous thing EVER!

One of my biggest remaining issues about my dad's death almost 9 years ago is that I too never got an "I love you and I'm proud of you" speech. He was dying for 6 months, but I guess he just wasn't that kind of dad, even if i needed him to be.
I feel ya.

Not to dump on your pretty post, but Twilight? A little to close to home for me. For serious. Teenage angst is a damn joke.

Three Cups of Tea, have you read it? Someone at church talked about it today and I thought of you for some reason.

Love Firefly Lane. I think I am being a good friend by making all my friends read it. They come back to me red eyed and sad. Its a great story!
