In approximately 2 weeks-ish, I am moving. (With my dad, for those of you keeping track. My job is not nearly secure enough that I feel like moving out. Yet. Soon. But that's a whole long story for another day.)
So, you're moving into a house where the previous owner's idea of housecleaning was... nothing.
Literally, there are 10 years of dirt, dust, and grime on every single surface. The carpets, the countertops, the walls, the light fixtures. Every single thing is FILTHY.
(Yes, I've gone through several rolls of paper towels and I do a load of housecleaning rags every single time I'm at the house.)
And then I get to the light fixtures. And I'm all "ugh, I don't want to deal with all of these ugly cheap-ass light fixtures."
Since the house was built in the '90s, it has a lot of ugly brass light fixtures. Fixtures we are going to replace... when we have time. AKA not before we move in.
So what's a girl to do when the light fixtures need cleaned but she wants to throw them in the trash?
Step 1: remove all glass parts from fixtures.
Step 2: realize the home's dishwasher is shot, which isn't a big deal cause we're replacing it... but still.
Step 3: Load all glass light parts into a laundry basket.
(Can you SEE how dusty these things are?? BARF!)
Step 4: Load the laundry basket into the car. Take great care because one slip and all your light fixtures are dunzo.
Step 5: Pray for no traffic and crazy drivers. The last thing I need is glass shards embedded in my skull.
Step 6: Unload lights directly into dishwasher. Run.
Step 7: Sparkly shiny lights.
Wasn't that easy??
(Or would it have just been easier to hand-wash them at the new house? You be the judge.)
So am I lazy or genius?

Most definitely genius! Who wants to touch someone elses grime more than you have to?!
GENIUS!!
completely genius!
Sweetie - I'm def going with genius here!! Good call!!
Genius for sure!
My vote's for genius. Why do more work than you have to?
P.s.-Isn't the preparation for moving such a pain? I hate all the cleaning!
Genius, definitely!
And, oh my goodness, I know what you mean when you talk about a house that has never seen a cleaning cloth. A few years back, when my brother opened his first restaurant, we had to make a big spring clean beforehand. It was disgustingly dusty and one week's work was just cleaning. But when you look at the results and everything is sparkly, you have a reason to be proud of yourself. And in your case: you can be very proud of your time-saving ingenuity, as well.
Utterly and completely genious!! I am sooo stealing this little move when I move into my new house. :-)
We are doing this at my house right now, but we are renovating/cleaning to sell... And we've been washing the glass from our light fixtures BY HAND. It is a PAIN. To the dishwasher they will now go!
genuis. duh!
Genius of course!!! Love your blog!
genuis!
That was a good idea! I wouldn't have thought to do that.
Love it! Definitely genius. I'm not a fan of the whole "hand washing" thing -- or, you know, manual labor in general. I mean, that's why we have all these clever machines, am I right?!
I say genius! Who would want to wash all of those by hand? NOT ME!
