Camera Time (Kinda Like Hammer Time, But Not)

Ok kids, remember when I started my new job, way back in February?

(Gah, was it seriously only 2 months ago? I am so burnt out I assumed that at least 3 months had passed. Bam, I'm dead.)

So, as a recap, my goal in life (short term, hopefully. Otherwise that's a very short list.) was to purchase these 3 items on my wish list.

Computer? Check.

Ring? Submitted insurance claim. Waiting.... (I am so patient...)

Camera? Well... it's time!

Ok, here's the thing.

Canon Rebel XSi
vs Nikon D3000.

From what I've read and researched... the Canon is the better camera.

However, the Nikon has super Nikon lenses and stuff.

The Canon is $575 (choke!) and the Nikon is $447 (choke again!).

We have a point and shoot Nikon that I HATE. It's blurry and grainy and I think it's the worst.

I had a Canon Elph as my first camera and LOVED it.

Of course, knowing my stupid brain, I just want the Canon cause it costs more. WTF is wrong with me?

And then part of my brain tells me to spend even more and jump up to the more advanced camera because I'll probably become a photographer and quit my job and won't I want a better camera then?

(Yep, a hobby. I need one. Besides obsessing over spending money. And we all know I like to spend money.)

Ok, fancy DSLR owners... what say you?

And non-fancy-DSLR owners.... hi, how's your week going? I can't believe it's hump day already... thank goodness. Anybody else want to crawl back into my bed and take a snooze?

I have the Canon Rebel XTi and LOVE it!! I think the XSi is the new and improved version, so I am sure you would love that one. I still don't know how to use mine like a "pro" - but I am learning more and more everyday. Practice makes perfect, I guess!

I got a Rebel Esi for Christmas and LOVE it! I always had an Elph too and my husband gave me an upgrade. I liked the canon because I had canon experience before. It's fantastico.

There is also a class online called Oh Shoot that it will teach you the basics of using an SLR camera.

I agree, Nikon point-and-shoots are AWFUL. But I have the D300 or something like that and it is AWESOME. I love it. Sounds like you're already on board for the Canon, but FWIW the Nikon DSLRs are nothing like their crappy point-and-shoot counterparts. Good luck!

Okay, I have a Nikon and I love it! It is the best and so easy to use. But if you really want the Canon, then I say get the Canon! Both are excellent cameras.

Canon! Canon! Canon! I have one and I am in love with it! No matter how bad a photographer you are your shots look great!

Warning - I have no camera knowledge, but I love both of those! I've been in the market for a new camera too, but it is hard to put that much down. Right now I only take pictures out with friends, maybe I'll wait till I'm a little older (for weddings and babies and stuff ;)).

I'm pretty sure they are both great!!! I'm a canon girl! I have the rebel T1i.

I only have a point and shoot but it's Canon and I freaking LOVE my Canon!

I have a Canon point and shoot and love it! But I so want a DSL so I'm interested in feedback as well. Looks like the Canons have it.

I have the Rebel as well and LOVE it. If you are used to the Canon interface (and like it) I suggest sticking to a Canon, since Nikon has a much different menu system, button placement, etc.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi and it is one of my most prized possessions. Nikon and Canon both make wonderful products, but Canon has really had my heart for the past three years. The biggest choice between the two brands (for me) has always been the color that each produces, and while Nikon has a fabulous range of colors, Canon's are much more natural, in my opinion. Also, DO NOT buy your camera from Best Buy or anything like that. You can get much better prices on www.bhphotovideo.com That website is the mecca for all things photography oriented. I am a photo minor, and since I was in high school that is the website that ALL my teachers have recommended. Hope I helped darling!

I have the canon rebel XSI and recommend it to EVERYONE.

Well you sound like you want the Canon so I would go with your intial desire. I have the Nikon D3000 and decided to get that after talking to people who I felt were knowledgable in the "camera industry" but I think you can't fail with either!

Sara McCarty said...

I really think it's a personal choice. Canon and Nikkon both make amazing cameras and are really comparable. I'd just go for whichever one you feel the most comfortable with and like better. You can't go wrong with either, but most people have a preference and tend to lean one way or the other.

I was raised on Canon cameras and I love them! I just got a Canon EOS 7D, which is mega fancy and I love it. No one will ever convince me that Nikkon is better than Canon. That was, until The Pioneer Woman came along and uses a Nikkon! And I love her. But I'm sticking with my Canon. Go figure!! It just shows that they're both great.

I have the Canon and I LOVE it as does every one I know that has it. However, everyone I know that has the Nikon loves theirs as well. I'm pretty sure you'll be happy either way!

I have a Sony A300 and looooove it! Like, love love love it. It's so much fun learning to use the manual settings to take even better pictures!

I have the Nikon D3000 and love it. I grew up on a Canon SLR and was happy with it as well, but the D3000 is so easy to use. Either way they are both good cameras. It's just a personal preference. Whatever you do, take come camera classes or tutorials to be sure you get the most out of either.

I hit snooze for a total of 45 minutes today, and got up a whole 10 minutes before I had to leave for work. Oops! Thank goodness tomorrow is Thursday. Is it me or does having a real job make the weeks go by so much faster!!

Everyone I know advises to go with Cannon, but I have no expertise in the area!

I recently got the XSi and it is impossible to get a bad shot. Well not impossible but I am pretty successful. I borrowed a DSLR Nikon on a trip to London a few years back and got a total of 2 decent pictures - hated it. It was very tempermental. Glad I found your blog!

I have the Canon Xsi and I LOVE it! I do however find myself drooling over all the "upgrades" that go with a fancy DSLR though so be warned that when/if you get one, you'll be itching to spice it up the most you can.

Melissa said...

Most definitely Canon! I posted about this a while back and I did a TON of research on both because I have never owned either brand before. I like the Nikon, but I found the Canon is way more user friendly. This is helpful if you are a first time SLR user like myself. Also, the Canon uses all universal lenses which is helpful if you ever want to think about getting different lenses and might want to get a cheaper brand. I have the Canon XSi and couldn't be happier. There are tons of tutorials online and it is so easy to learn and use. I think you'll love it if you go with it! These kinds of cameras are so fun to use and I take pictures all the time!!

(Hey, it worked for the march.)

I have a Canon point and shoot and it's nice!

Rachel said...

I can't say anything about the Nikon point and shoots, BUT, I do have the Nikon D40 (they don't make it anymore, but it's essentially the D3000) now and I love it. I have zero complaints. I would go to a camera store, use them both and then decide. More money doesn't always mean it's better!

Hi, I was just linked over to your blog and saw this post and had to chime in. Sounds like you have a lot of Canon supporters so far, but I belong to the Nikon camp. I would say go into a camera store (do you have a Wolf/Ritz Camera nearby?) and hold them. The folks working there can tell you everything you'd need to know. See how they fit in your hand, which one feels better, how heavy they are, where the controls are and how easy they are to access for you. But be warned - I don't know how much photography experience you have, but once you get an SLR, if you're a photography geek whatsoever, you're going to want to keep going. :-) And it gets expensive. Nikon lenses are superb (do your research as far as what best fits your needs) and I've never been disappointed. I don't know much about the D3000. I have a D90 and absolutely love it. The D5000 is very comparable in features and a little less expensive I think. Here is a really good resource for all your camera research: http://www.kenrockwell.com/ - it's been really helpful for me so far. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help! Enjoy!!

By the way, great name. :-)

Canon actually makes superior lenses, though you will be shelling out a pretty penny for some of them. Their lower-level lenses are actually cheaper than Nikon.

Think of this way -- once you purchase a family, you will likely stick with it, since lenses are not interchangeable between Canon and Nikon. Do you view the DSLR as just a passing hobby for taking a few fun pictures? Or do you really want to learn to use all aspects of your camera and develop your photography throughout your lifetime? If it's just a for-fun toy type purchase, it really doesn't matter between the two. But if you think someday, in the future, you might want to upgrade your camera, it's better to stick in the same family so you can use your lenses again... and as far as quality lenses goes... my vote is for Canon.

I have experiences with both and as someone new to DSLR cameras the Nikon is so much more user friendly. I HIGHLY recommend you go to a camera store and "play" with it. Everyone has preferences and they are both great cameras.

I love you for posting this. I'm stuck in the DSLR camera debate, too...but I'm in no way ready to buy one. For what it's worth, I have heard great things about both. Like that really helps. ;)

Can't wait to see what you've decided on. Oh, and my brain works the same way, too..."go for the more expensive one!" Seriously...I think the programming in my brain is off or something. Silly gray matter. ;)

I've been shopping cameras for the past few months as well. I have a canon SD400 with 5 mega pixels from 2005....It still works, but doesn't have the awesome new features they have come up with. So I just got the new Canon SD1400 IS and it is AWESOME!! I would so buy a canon!

We're a Nikon family. I have the D50, hubs has the D200, and now best friend just got the D3000. She loooovvvveeesss it. You're gonna get diehards either way, so I say go with your gut.

This is about FOREVER late, but I love my Canon. I don't know much about the differences, but I can say that I love mine. And that the point and shoot Nikon I have is also a POS, but my mom's Canon P&S is quite lovely. When you're spending that much money, don't base your decision on just a little price difference. You're already spending alot, no matter way, so be sure like what you buy so you only have to spend it once.
