Dry Brushing for Vanity's Sake

I wanted today to be a Wine Wednesday or a Wedding Wednesday, but my mind is just too scattered for that.  At only 5 am as I started typing this post, I've been awake for 2 hours and my brain has run through a flipping exhaustive list of real worries.... but today's post needs to be more lighthearted, methinks.

Last night, I tweeted about "dry brushing" of the skin.  I think it's been around for ages (literally ancient China), but I feel like it was trendy a year or two ago... but in case you (and me and everyone else) missed it, let's recap.

Dry brushing is the process or rubbing a soft, dense, natural-fiber brush along the surface of the skin (usually not the face, I'm thinking) in home of promoting even skin tone, better circulation, and (allegedly) the hastening of the body ridding itself of toxins and waste.

The first reaction I got from twitter (after "whaat?") was "OUCH!"  And friends, there is no ouch about it.

A "dry skin" brush is not your standard nail brush... or any other brush for that matter.  All the articles stress to use a "natural" brush (natural what, I have no idea) vs anything synthetic.

Below is a pic of a natural brush on the left (note the dense, softer bristles) vs. a plastic drugstore nail brush that I use for pedicures.

Body Brush (Left), Nail Brush (Right)

They are totally and completely different.  I attempted to run the nail brush over my arm and it left scratches.  The brush on the left was soft and barely registered.  Like a loofah in the shower.

The official "direction" of dry brushing is that, starting at your feet, you should rub the skin in small, circular strokes heading towards the heart.  Now, the last part of that sentence was a bit strange to me.  According to many rounds of googling, the reason to head for your heart (or middle/tummy according to some pages), is that you are essentially "pushing" the toxins and waste in your system towards your digestive system, where they will be flushed out.

Al-righty then.

So, "amazing health benefits" aside, I've been interested in this as a purely cosmetic endeavor.

You see, I have the blessing/curse of being born with the unsightly condition of keratosis pilaris - which is often described as "chicken skin" of the upper arms.  My upper arms are bumpy, sometimes red/purple-y when I'm cold, are fun to pick at (not), and have turned me quite self-conscious.

So, what's a girl to do?

Well, first I tried an OTC lotion at my doctor's recommendation for a year.  No dice.  I started using a prescription foam (fairly expensive) for the condition in the fall... mixed results.  They are MUCH better than they used to be, and I think I'm the only one who obsesses over them - but still, they aren't perfect, and they are certainly making me anxious about wearing a wedding dress in less than 5 months.

I've tried most creams and scrubs on the market.  Acne meds, hydro-cortisone, you name it.

Unfortunately, this post doesn't have a neat and tidy resolution.  I've decided to try dry-brushing and see if perhaps it helps the prescription absorb a bit better.

I've also read recently that an omega-3 fatty-acid deficiency could be to blame for some of this condition, and that applying coconut oil can help reduce the appearance of the bumps... but I'm still grasping at straws here.

Wikipedia says 50% of adults have "chicken-skin" on their upper arms.

Are you one of them?  Have any magical remedies for me to try?

I'm desperate.

All Things Chic

As you guys know, I have been writing for the beauty and fashion site Chic Critique for a year or so now... (yeah, I have no clue how long it's been.... only that it's been awhile, ok?)

But today, I'm so excited to announce, Chic Critique is re-launching as All Things Chic.

All Things Chic focuses on not only beauty and fashion (my favorites!) but also home and decor (my Achilles heel!) and family stuff.

There are a TON of giveaways and fun stuff happening over there next week... so get excited! (And probably hide your credit cards... there are some fabulous deals and steals over there too!!)

In other news, I have to work tonight so I'm not going to be able to watch the Real Housewives reunion live. I know, my life is hard and it's all very tragic.

But don't worry, I have the weekend and Friday off so I'll be watching it bright and early tomorrow. I'm disturbingly excited.

I'm SO Fashion. Obviously.

First off, thank you for all your sweet comments yesterday. If you are having a bad day, just go read all the sweet comments. I just wanna say BIG GROUP HUG!! Whew, I feel better.

Maybe I should start a blog where we all just vent about our "problems"? I feel like we could all use the venting space!

Moving on.

------------------------------

The lovely Susan (aka Susan in the South) forwarded me an e-mail from Glamour magazine earlier this week.

The e-mail talked about how "smokey beige" is the color of February, and then went on to recommend a few shades, one of which was Commander in Chic.
What I'm trying to say is, really, I'm so trendy.

Ok, I'm usually the complete, 100% opposite of trendy. However, today, I am trendy.

Speaking of trends.... you know what trend I am HATING right now? The fact that stores only have short-sleeves and tank tops in stores.

Have they been outside recently?
(Took that photo this morning. It looks like snow, but it's actually fog frozen onto the tree. Crazy, huh?)

Any trends bugging you today? Want to tell me how trendy I am? (Kidding.)

Happy Friday!!

My Goodness!

Ok, is it me or was this past weekend non-existent? Seriously!

How is it Monday already?

I slept barely at all on Saturday night and overslept this morning (till 8 o'clock! Which is basically the latest I ever sleep, except when I was in college and my roommates attempted to sleep train me).

On Saturday night, I saw the movie When in Rome with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.
Predictable cheesy romantic comedy, but it was cute. I'd see it again.

Plus all of the scenes in Rome made me want to hop on a plane. Definitely making me regret the fact that I didn't go abroad during my sophomore year of college when several of my friends did. DUMB!

--------------------------------------

I tried on this dress at Target yesterday and wanted to love it because it's such a fun print.
(Why yes, I was too exhausted to take off my turtleneck and jeans... so I just put the dress right over the top. Lazy much?)

Unfortunately the fabric is... stiff. I felt like I was wearing wrapping paper because it crinkled too much. For only $20 though, I'm still considering it.

--------------------------------------

And now it's 9:30 and I still haven't picked up groceries or showered.

But I did write a very thorough review on L'Oreal Lash Boosting Products over at Chic Critique.

Go read it and tell me what you're thinking.

--------------------------------------

FYI, the job I was supposed to hear about by Friday? Still haven't heard. No clue.

--------------------------------------

How was your weekend? Did you catch up on sleep for me?

The Face of Addiction

Seriously guys, I'm addict.

Cause there's just no justifying how much I need this stuff.

Are you addicted to anything? Do you need lip products like most people needs air? *Raises hand*

Today is full of my dad's surgery and New Moon, so I'm going to be absent most of the day.... I hope everyone has an awesome day.

And for the #TwilightPosse - all I have to say is this: NEW MOON!!! T-Minus 18 hours and counting....

Beauty Habits... and HELP ME!

So, I love to hear about other people's beauty routines. Sometimes people tell me about a particular task and I am floored that I never worked it into my routine. And then I feel so uncouth. (Do you know what uncouth means? I think it's a fabulous word!)

Today I thought I'd offer up one of the many strange things I do.

Number One: I go on periodic eyebrow-growing-out binges. For one thing, I HATE super-skinny eyebrows. Brows are meant to frame the eyes, and I like a good frame. Who doesn't? One of my best friends gets married a week from next Saturday, so I'm "growing" mine until next week sometime.

I'm lucky because I don't have super dark eyebrows... I probably couldn't get away if mine were much darker. I hate how it looks while they are all out of control.... but I love how good they look after I grow them out.

Do you have any weird eyebrow habits? Are you an everyday tweezer? A never tweezer?

I'd share more weird beauty habits... but I need to make sure none of you are going to stone me for having odd grooming habits.

-------------------------------------

And now, I need your HELP!

Ok, I've posted about my hair before.

I've shown you some of the high points.

I've shown you some before pics....
...and the after pics.

I've been blonde forever. I've been getting highlights forever, year-round (although not that frequently).

The pic directly above on the right, taken in March, was my last cut - although I had highlights in April.

So here I am today:

I have an appointment for a color and cut... so what should I do? Keep it long? Chop it off? Keep the highlights?

Cast your vote or forever hold your peace!

And then make me feel good about my out-of-control eyebrows by sharing your weird beauty habits. I know you have some!
