A Paper Birthday

In the past few weeks, I have been increasingly concerned about my birthday.  Not because I was hitting the dreaded(ish) quarter-century mark, but because it would be Mr. RH and I's first birthday together.  He hit his birthday on the week he asked me out, so my birthday was the guinea pig setting the tone for future birthdays.

I was, to be honest, not a very happy camper about it.  Tears might have been shed.

I wasn't so much worried about what he would bestow upon me for my birthday as I was worried about him being worried about getting me something "perfect."  Being as smart and as kind as he is, I knew he'd be fine.  But I still didn't like the idea of him going overboard for me.

On Thursday, my last day at work, he sent flowers. I blushed to the roots of my hair and they smelled divine.  Everyone was suitably impressed.

After that, though, I was out of town.  Nothing was said about gifts although we can all safely bet that I was thinking about it.  Obsessing, naturally.

Yesterday, Mr. RH and I had "Sarah Day."  We spent the day shopping (Nordstrom Rack!  Container Store!) and eating (Chick-fil-A!  Cheesecake Factory!).  He didn't say anything about gifts and I only subtly (as a mack truck) hinted about it a couple of times.

He had left a card for me in my (disaster of a) bedroom so when I got home at 9 pm I was dying to get my hands on it.

I honestly didn't know what to expect, seeing as not much would fit inside a little envelope.  I was legitimately nervous.

Inside was a paper IOU.  My first-ever birthday IOU.

Turns out that Mr. RH actually has a Nook Color that he purchased for me almost a month ago.  Also a month ago, Amazon introduced it's newest addition to the tablet lineup, the Kindle Fire.  Knowing his girlfriend's Amazon obsession well, he realized that the Nook Color would never burn a fire in my soul quite like the Fire.

Although it was a bit tricky figuring out how he was going to gift me something that hadn't been released yet.  Luckily for me, he's not only handsome but smart too.  And an amazing gift-giver.  Clearly.

And that is the story of how Mr. RH got me a piece of paper for my 25th birthday.

We've got 7 months till his birthday... I feel like I need to start planning asap.
